AFRICA’S LOST CLASSICS

2017 is a special year for Tano (meaning ‘five’ in Swahili), the consortium of the five African Film Festivals in the UK. We collaborated on Africa’s Lost Classics, a project to revisit the history of African cinema, led by Africa in Motion (AiM) Film Festival in Scotland and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). With this project we bring (back) to UK screens some of the greatest African films that have been banned, censored, lost or forgotten. Old and lost films have been rediscovered, and we have enabled the restoration of some important African women’s films. Including restored and never-seen-before films, it is an unprecedented look at the long history behind some of the world’s masterpieces of African cinema.

Africa’s Lost Classics are being screened at African festivals across the UK over October and November.
