Simon Bright

Simon grew up in Rhodesia, strongly supporting Robert Mugabe. During the Liberation War he went into exile to avoid being drafted into the Rhodesian army. After Independence, he joined Mugabe’s Ministry of Agriculture making videos to help small scale farmers improve their techniques. Together with Ingrid Sinclair he set up a company to produce his first documentary, exploring the region’s resistance to apartheid South Africa’s destructive attacks. He established the first annual southern African film festival, ran film training courses and worked across the region to produce films with local crews, covering the complex realities of southern Africa. When Mugabe turned against white Zimbabweans and Simon was once again forced into exile, he made the highly successful ‘Robert Mugabe…What Happened?’. In Bristol he co-founded Afrika Eye Film Festival and is currently developing a series on pre-colonial African kingdoms.
